customer satisfaction over anything else

Anne and Dave are very professional. Dave worked on the leaking of my chimney. The work was done so quickly and so efficiently. He was very thoughtful. He was so quiet when he was working that I did not hear any noise from the roof. Highly recommended!

David and Anne are amazing! They helped us to figure out a timeline and scope of work that met our needs and budget, and the work was done super quickly and professionally. Everything went smoothly – from initial communication and quote, through to finishing up the rebuild of our chimney. Would definitely recommend David for any masonry work! 💯

Fantastic, prompt and thorough service. Dave is great at what he does. Anne is thorough and communicative, and together they make a great team. Dave worked on our chimney, and we were concerned that it would be a big job. He made it look easy, and I don’t know if that chimney has ever looked better! 10/10 recommend.

FAQ.

How often should a chimney be inspected in Nova Scotia?2026-03-13T18:20:10+00:00

Chimneys should be professionally inspected at least once per year, especially in Nova Scotia’s coastal and freeze–thaw climate.

Annual inspections are particularly important if:

  • Your chimney is used regularly (wood stove or fireplace)
  • The home is older or has original masonry
  • You’ve experienced leaks, staining, or unusual odours
  • The chimney is exposed to wind, rain, and salt air

Even if a chimney isn’t actively used, masonry can still deteriorate due to moisture penetration and temperature changes. Regular inspections help catch small issues (such as failing mortar, cracked crowns, or flashing problems) before they develop into major structural repairs.

Can chimney repairs or rebuilding be done in winter?2026-03-13T18:22:02+00:00

Some chimney work can be completed in winter, but it depends on the scope of work and weather conditions.

  • Minor repairs or inspections may be possible during mild winter periods
  • Repointing and rebuilding typically require temperatures that allow proper mortar curing
  • Snow, ice, wind, and prolonged freezing conditions can delay or limit masonry work

In many cases, winter is the best time for inspections and planning, with repair or rebuilding scheduled for early spring when conditions are more suitable. Proper timing ensures the work lasts and performs as intended.

How long does a chimney rebuild typically last?2026-03-13T18:22:31+00:00

A properly rebuilt chimney should last several decades when constructed with quality materials and correct detailing.

Longevity depends on:

  • Proper brick and mortar selection for local climate conditions
  • Correct installation of flashing and chimney crown
  • Adequate drip edges to shed water away from the masonry
  • Regular inspections and maintenance

In Nova Scotia, moisture management is critical. Chimneys that fail prematurely often do so because water was allowed to penetrate the structure. A well-built chimney, designed to handle freeze–thaw cycles and heavy weather exposure, provides long-term safety and durability.

Is repointing enough, or am I delaying the inevitable?2026-03-13T18:23:05+00:00

Repointing can be an effective solution when the underlying masonry is still structurally sound. If the bricks are in good condition and deterioration is limited to the mortar joints, repointing restores strength and helps protect the chimney from further moisture damage.

However, repointing may only be a temporary fix if:

  • Bricks are cracked, soft, or deteriorating
  • The chimney has widespread water damage
  • The structure is unstable or leaning
  • The chimney has been repeatedly repaired in the past
  • Moisture continues to penetrate after repairs

In these cases, repointing can delay—but not prevent—eventual failure. Continued exposure to moisture and freeze–thaw cycles will keep degrading the structure, often leading to more extensive and costly repairs later.

The most effective approach is a professional assessment to determine whether repointing will provide a long-term solution or if rebuilding part or all of the chimney is the safer investment.

Do older or heritage homes require different chimney repairs?2026-03-13T18:35:10+00:00

Yes. Older and heritage homes often require a different approach to chimney repair than newer construction.

Many historic chimneys were built with:

  • Softer, hand-made brick
  • Lime-based mortar rather than modern cement
  • Construction methods that allow the structure to breathe

Using modern, hard mortars or incorrect repair methods on older masonry can trap moisture and accelerate brick failure. Proper repairs respect the original materials and construction techniques while improving durability and safety.

A careful assessment ensures repairs strengthen the chimney without compromising the integrity of the original masonry.

Can historic brick be reused during a chimney rebuild?2026-03-13T18:23:49+00:00

In some cases, yes.

If the original brick is still structurally sound, it may be carefully salvaged and reused during a rebuild—particularly on visible portions of the chimney where preserving character matters.

However, bricks that are cracked, soft, or heavily deteriorated should be replaced to ensure safety and longevity. Reuse decisions are made case-by-case, balancing heritage appearance with long-term performance.

Why do older chimneys fail faster in modern weather conditions?2026-03-13T18:24:12+00:00

Many older chimneys were built before modern moisture control details (such as drip edges, chimney caps, or proper flashing) were standard.

Today’s weather patterns, combined with freeze–thaw cycles and increased moisture exposure, can overwhelm historic masonry if water is allowed to enter the structure.

Upgrading key details while respecting original construction helps extend the life of older chimneys without unnecessary overbuilding.
